A. Hughe's purpose for recalling this event is how he regrets lying about seeing Christ like Westley did. he saw that Westley wasn't struck by lightning for using the Lord's name in vain and for swearing in the temple. He fell into the peer pressure of being the only one sitting there with everyone praying and yelling for him to stand up and be saved by Christ so he lied and pretended that he saw the light and wasn't alone on the bench anymore. He probably was feeling like if there was a God out there that he didn't care about Langston very much.
